We were lucky during our stay Alkmaar celebrated the 450 Years Ontzet from the Spaniards. The festivities were awesome. Alkmaar was very central for us in the Netherlands. We visited the great St Laurent church, Bergen, Bergen aan Zee, Egmond aan Zee, Amsterdam, Zaanse Schans, Den Helder and walked the beautiful parks in Alkmaar.

A lovely alternative to Amsterdam - the water courses around the city give the place a very special feel. And the people are very helpful and friendly. If you get a chance to, dine at Herren van Sonoy, a restaurant just a short walk away from the Grand Hotel Alkmaar on Gedempte Nieuwesloot.

If you want a mini-Amsterdam experience without the big city...
If you want a mini-Amsterdam experience without the big city hassle, Alkmaar is the place to go. Very "Dutch" but on a much smaller scale than other cities. Lots of cute lanes to wander down, an amazing church, loads of cute coffee shops and artisan boutiques. Excellent bars and restaurants - and of course, a few canals and too many bikes!

It was great to stay in another part of the Netherlands...
It was great to stay in another part of the Netherlands other than Amsterdam. I would say it is more suited to couples, older people or families. There are some coffee shops but the feel of the town is much calmer and more chilled than Amsterdam. One of the pluses is that there is a great High street where you can find some little gems and some fantastic places to eat and drink.

Alkmaar is a magnifcient town for people who like to visit...
Alkmaar is a magnifcient town for people who like to visit older Dutch towns. The canals are nice. The architecture is nice. Some walks really take you back to the time of Rembrandt.
The iconic cheesemarket is a touristic attraction that one can enjoy but the the canals and the houses adjoining it are the real reason. Do this in summer. Consider walking through the town at sunrise in summer, before breakfast. Brilliant experience.
I LOVED this airbnb in Alkmaar! The adorable town was the highlight of my trip to the Netherlands and this was in no small part due to this charming stay. The hosts left an array of treats upon arrival (wine, cheese, chocolate) as well as more helpful additions for cooking like sugar, oil, butter, etc. The place was within 5 minute walking distance of nearly everything and decorated wonderfully. The cheese cellar is such a neat addition! Would stay again!
The place was great. I would definitely come again in case I have to visit Alkmaar in the future. The only downside I can think of is that the heating is a bit slow. In our case we arrived in the evening and in the next day the temperature was comfortable. Anyways everything else was just perfect - the kitchen had everything you can think of, the beds were comfortable, the living area was superbly designed, clean and tidy.
The room is really nice, beautiful and cozy. It is quite big. The view is also great just next to cannel. Location of the hotel is perfect. Just a few mins work can reach bars and restaurants. The staff are very kind. I had late check in and heavy suitcase. They opened the door for me and carried it for me to my room. Really appreciated. Above all, I really recommand this hotel and will stay again if in Alkmaar.
Modern and cozy house with canal view and close to city center, clean rooms and good atmosphere. It was perfect for traveling alone and visiting Alkmaar and Amsterdam for a couple of days, would have preferred to stay longer. The Landlord and his daughter share the house, which was a big bonus. Very kind and accommodating people with lots of helpful tips about the area. Would definitely recommend!
Really lovely hotel in the centre of Alkmaar. Staff was super friendly. We had some issues with cleanliness of the room but it was very quickly rectified. Guys fixed it quickly and offered us lovely compensation- bottle of Prosecco that we enjoyed very much. It was great to have breakfast included. Nice buffet with lots of choices. Thank you grand hotel for having us ! It was a perfect weekend.
Wow, what an amazing stay at this little gem in Alkmaar! We loved exploring the city, day-tripping to Amsterdam and coming home to this comfortable and cozy hotel. The staff were incredible and so friendly, welcoming and on top of everything. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a unique and beautiful experience in Holland!
It’s a old jailhouse, but renovated to a first class hotel. They have kept as much as possible of the old jail interior.
When you walk up to your room it looks and feels like a real jail. They kept the old steel stairways, and steel cel doors.

food within the hotel was delicious especially breakfast.
Staff go above and beyond, we travelled with a little girl and it was faultless.
Lovely hostel/ hotel in the city centre of Alkmaar, a few steps from the famous cheese market. Boutique feel, pub in front part. Staff went above and beyond to facilitate my special request. Great value for money.
Hotel was nicely renovated. New decor, beautiful bathroom and cozy setting. Room temperature was perfect when we were visiting during the winter. The reception even upgraded our room for free.
Lovely comfortable apt, great location for seeing the town of Alkmaar. Owners provided simple and thorough information for location and access. I look forward to returning in the future.
